Sharing in Suffering

“For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too”. 2 Corinthians 1:5 (ESV). One of the interesting things about reading the Bible is that we never fully find all that there is contained within its texts. Sharing in Christ’s sufferings is a theme that is repeated over and over in the New Testament. There is much contained within this theme, but let us consider just one aspect of this statement. The Lord Jesus loves this world. He and the Father love us so much that He died for us on the cross. But this was not the end of his sufferings. Today He continually longs for a lost world. At least part of what it means to share in Christ’s sufferings, is to share His concern to the point of pain for a lost world. We are to love people that much. Without the Spirit’s help this is impossible. But if we ask, the Lord will give us a heart for the lost and hurting. No news report, journey, shopping trip or day at work will ever be the same. He will give you love, and show you the hurting hearts of people that we meet or even just see. It is not a comfortable way to live, but it is following Christ, and that is what we are called to do. He will also show us how to respond. Sometimes it might be practical help, or a word of encouragement, and it will always be to pray. May God bless you as you share in Christ’s sufferings, and as you do so may you also experience the truth that you will also abundantly share in His comfort.
